spotted fawn
december twenty-second
i took this photo two summers ago on a solo overnight on the superior trail. i was trying to hike 34 miles in two days, in rainy conditions--the hike was ultimately a success, but stressful and i learned a lot. i learned things like, wow, so you can have a blister that big? hmm. the biggest lesson i learned: don't hike in cotton. especially not wet cotton. also, don't try drying out your hiking boots over your stove because they'll probably just end up melting along with your polyester socks. and bring your tent, not just the fly, otherwise you'll end up spending the night in a stranger's tent cause yours is flooded with mud.
i was following the gooseberry river to the grand falls; it starts out as a little stream and by the time it gets close to the lake, it's pretty big and has some gorgeous falls. i spotted this fawn working its way down the river and managed to get a nice shot with my telephoto after following it for about a quarter of a mile downstream. it was a really cool memory, to be out in the woods following this little animal on a rainy morning.
i took this photo on the same day as those in moist morning.
