sand dunes

october 3rd

i took these pictures on the way home from arizona. we went through colorado for a few different reasons, but mostly garden of the gods in colorado springs. in any case, somewhere in south-central colorado my sister woke me up from my 7am slumber to venture around in these sand dunes. by some standards they are small, but it's definitely a lot bigger than my backyard and a lot more fun.

the only problem i had taking these pictures is that i had to choose which picture i wanted; most of them look the same, so to find the best out of a pool of available pictures is a challenge. you have every chance to take a perfect picture; after all, it's sitting still. the early morning light sculped the sand beautifully.

the first two are, well, your basic sand pictures. pretty, but cliche, maybe? the last one i like a lot. people say i'm tall...they've never seen me quite this tall. if you can't figure it out, it's my shadow falling down a sand dune. i wished there weren't footprints on the dune but i realized i'd have to take the picture the way it was since the sun was rising fast. it works.

i just looked around to see if i could figure out which park it was...turns out it was the great sand dunes national monument. hmm. that's a lot more special than i knew....i must have slept past the sign.

i'm surprised you didn't get more comments on this gallery, especially since 1) so many people have seen it, and 2) they're great pictures. the first one reminds me of my iguana, which must seem totally random to anyone other than me. the second one i like...well i don't have a reason. and the third is just hilarious. i'm not at all surprised you took that picture, ben.

Ben, the first picture looks remarkably not unlike an iguana! I must be very creative to think of that! The only time i saw you as tall as your shadow is in the 3rd picture was....oh I guess it was never!

the first of these shots is my favorite-- the grainy quality of the sand is really highlighted, a lot of sand dune shots just focus on the BIG shadows. good approach and nice lines!
