rushing symmetry

i really like this picture. to me, it is a good combination of lines/orderliness and organic forms. the white in the middle is water--the boxes on the far left and right are sluiceways.
to explain this picture takes some work. i was visiting the locks by seattle (site of mechanics) when i found this picture. the locks change are part of a dam which holds a lake about 20 feet higher than puget sound. coincidentally, this creates an ecological problem because spawning salmon can't get back to their spawning grounds in the rivers above the lake. so, the washington dnr has created a whole fish ladder system that allows the full grown salmon to get from puget sound into the lake. however, the young salmon that hatch have to be able to get from the lake to puget sound and the ocean. so there are these water jets that come out from the dam, letting the fingerlings through. the sluice boxes on the left and right carry the fish through and shoot them out into the sound. to slow down the water, they have filters on the sides of the boxes that let a lot of water through to slow down the water in the boxes. that's what you see happening in the middle--water pouring into the space between the boxes.
