montreal street photography

november first

i had an excellent chance to visit montreal a few weeks ago. my dad is a professor and was presenting at a education conference in montreal, so my mom and i went with. we spent a couple day walking around downtown; since i had good experiences in chicago with street photography, i made sure i had enough film with on this trip.

i shot mostly black and white. i'll just comment on a couple of these pictures, because part of the point is that the people speak for themselves.

in any case, i really like the one with the dad and his little girl. i was walking back to our hotel with my parents, and i wasn't able to get a better shot of them. had i been walking by myself, i would have invested about 20 minutes stalking this lovely pair through downtown montreal. they were so photogenic-- it was unreal!

the lady with the bicycle was a pleasant picture to take. most people don't relish you pointing a camera at them as you walk by, but this lady turned, noticed the camera, and gave a nice, pleasant smile for me. classic.

okay, i have to let people know what one of my friends had to say about this picture.

friend: not only do we have the dead marshes, but now the dead forests
me: ?
friend: it looks like ghosts walking around in a forest
friend: the picture
friend: your watery plastic
me: really?
friend: yeah, it does
me: it's a resturaunt in montreal...
friend: i don't see it
me: you're strange
friend: thanks love you too
me: they had a plastic thing around the patio
me: to keep out the cold and rain
friend: okay, i see it now
me: haha you're strange, see?
friend: haha
friend: well all the ripples in the plastic look like trees
me: right
friend: and the people are hard to see so they look kinda ghosty
me: right
friend: anyway i don't have to explain myself to you
me: right

The dad and girl picture is neat...but they might have called the police if you stalked them for 20 minutes around downtown Montreal...just a thought :)

"they might have called the police if you stalked them for 20 minutes around downtown Montreal"

haha, wouldn't it be fun to explain myself to a french-speaking police officer? :)

3. really really like it... I thought someone was dumping water on the poor people at first... then I thought it was a leaky gutter, but now, now I know the truth... anyhow, still very cool :)
4, I like the chairs, but why are they tied? Set the chairs free!
7, the lines from the street add great dimensions... I like.
8, it has a cool feel to it. (is that an artsy word or what....) yeah, a cool feel.
10, wow. I really really like this one. great people perspective and depth of field.
