lake superior
september twenty-first
lake superior is like a second home to me. both of my parents grew up in silver bay, about an hour north of duluth on the north shore. it's a gorgeous place; my grandparents have lived there since the 1950s. i've spent a lot of weekends walking the lake superior shore, playing in the frigid water, and lately, taking pictures. lots of them. it's probably my favorite place to take pictures.
now then, the photo captions.
photos one and two: just interesting water scapes. obviously, it's the largest freshwater body of water on the continent, so you have to have water pictures.
photo three: this isn't so much an art picture as much as a weird/cool picture. at bayfront park, there is a breakwater that goes out to silver island. a lot of gulls congregate at silver island for whatever reason. on this particular day, there was a stiff wind and this flock of gulls was just floating above the water. bizarre.
the fourth picture is on madeline island, near ashland on the south shore. it's one of the apostle islands, a really gorgeous place. this is big bay, on the north side of the island. it's a really neat bay--you can walk out about a hundred yards and still be in about four feet of water. what's funny about it is on a warm summer day it looks so inviting, so you tend not to remember that it is 35-45 degree lake superior. what a rude awakening when you jump in!
number five on our menu today is another madeline island picture. just a pretty sand/grass combo.
second to last was taken from madeline island. that's the ashland, wisconsin mainland. i'm typically scared of the sun in my photography, but occasionally i just try a picture like this and it turns out. i like the sun flare you see, it adds some interest.
the last on the docket is a moon over the lake. i took the picture from a hillside near silver bay.
more photos in this never ending river of lake superior beauty will certainly come.
