this was a very satisfying print to make. i started with a very flat image with almost no contrast and dodged and burned to beat the band to pull out the result. i had about five layers of dodging and burning to do on this photo, so it was a fun challenge to print. every one of my copies of this print is different from the others because of the steps involved.
to take the picture, i removed my lens, flipped it around, and mostly guessed on my exposure. the flipped lens technique gives awesome depth of field.
my favorite thing about this image is how the depth is abstracted. my eye is looking at both the interaction of light and dark and the focus to try to figure out the dimensions of the image, but they give different information so it seems a bit detached. sweet. i hadn't really tried this on any other image and i like the idea--i'll be experimenting with this more in the future.
