disasters

december twenty-fifth

this spring/summer, i took a couple trips; one to arizona and the southwest, and the other to niagara falls and beyond into the northeast.

now, in arizona, there is a great place, the grand canyon. it's gorgeous. so, i hiked around in the canyon with my sister and brother in law, then got up to the rim in time to snap a roll of sunset pictures. gorgeous, right?

well, then i went to niagara falls a month or two later. another beautiful spot; i probably won't go there again in a while. i took a roll of pictures there, too.

so, two rolls of film, two perfect locations, the results should be amazing, right?

well...it turns out it was only one roll of film. and...i didn't wind the tail on the film all the way into the canister, then grabbed it for niagara falls. terrible!

i almost puked when i got these pictures developed...i likely won't be to both of these locations in a long time. :(

enjoy, i guess...

There is a book about this - when bad things happen to good people. Thanks for sharing. The juxtaposition of the water and the canyon... you could make something of it, I think.

i think that the blockiness of the 5th one actually looks really cool. like you did that digitally and on purpose. so i liked it. i know i'm not a professional photography critic, but i know what i like. and the second one is really cool too because it looks like that valley is foggy. so i guess sometimes you have to make lemonade out of things, and this is the time, because i like them. i don't know if this makes you feel at all better, but, hey, i just thought i'd throw you my opinions. your photography is beautiful. have a good one.

Disaster? Where?
Number one is just awesome... looks like the boat is going to fall into the canyon. Ben, you out-do yourself.

I think these are some of the most interesting photos I've seen on your site so far (except for the flower one, I don't like that one too much). I'm always attracted to the idea of "perfect imperfection" in photography...that chance event that is caught on film and doesn't necessarily follow the "rules" of photography yet is entirely interesting on its own. I know you didn't mean for this to happen but I think you could attach a really interesting concept to this collection of photos. They are very evocative of memory, time past/lost, juxtaposition of dreams/reality, etc. These also have a somewhat alternative process feel to them which I love.

I stumbled onto this gallery...looked at the pictures...said to myself "wow" and then read your opinion of them. I am very surprised that you didn't see the beauty in them, Ben. I would love to see more like this...i studied this a bit in one of my photography classes...only it was done intentionally in the dark room rather than accidentally on a roll of film. I would love to talk to you about these...and see more of the prints if you still have the rest of them.
