arizona desert horizon
september twenty-first
this past spring (spring of 2002) i went to the southwest with my sister. one of our stops was our grandparents home in yuma, az. now, yuma, arizona, as you can see, is very flat. there happens to be some foothills (i'm not sure what mountain they belong to--i didn't see one) about 3 miles away from our grandparent's rv park. my grandpa said they were about a mile. in any case, we set out to hike up to the top of these foothills (about 1000 feet). it became obvious, though, that we were in for a lot longer hike and decided not to actually go up the foothill. i did go up a hundred feet or so to take this picture, though.
the picture kind of reminds me of a hike i took in fort collins, co last summer. if you know about ft. collins, you know it is right on the edge of the rocky mountains. we hiked up horse tooth ridge, a 2500 foot hike (about 5 miles on the ground) up from another 8,000 feet or so. i don't know the exact elevation, but when you get to the top you look north from the top and see mountains on your left, completely flat prairie to your right. the prairie seems to never end. it's a great experience.
back in arizona, i didn't get bitten by a poisonous snake. whew.
